In 1700 the Dutch Catholic Martyr Book saw the light, compiled by the Delft priest Petrus Opmeer. It describes the fates of martyrs who, for the Catholic faith, were cruelly slain both in times of the wild heathens and by the reformist sects.

Petrus Opmeer (1526-1594) was a Dutch-Catholic historian. After his death, his son, who is also named Petrus, translated the manuscript into Latin in 1625. A Dutch translation followed only in 1700.
