Decorative tapestry realized on a regenerated faux-leather support, with a high-definition artistic image inspired by Japanese art, yokai folklore, and the Nukekubi legend, a haunting supernatural creature from Japanese tradition.

The composition depicts an elegant Japanese woman seated in a traditional setting, wrapped in a sumptuous kimono richly decorated with floral motifs. Her composed posture, the fan delicately held between the fingers, and the refined hairstyle initially evoke a tranquil scene of feminine beauty, but a surprising element immediately reveals its supernatural nature: the woman’s head is separated from the body and floats above the neck.

The subject recalls the figure of Nukekubi, a yokai from Japanese folklore often considered a variant of Rokurokubi. In traditional narratives, during the night the Nukekubi’s head can detach completely from the body and move autonomously, while the body remains still. This feature transforms an appearance that is human and refined into a presence that is mysterious and potentially unsettling.

In the work, the separation between head and body is depicted with great visual elegance. Subtle locks of hair seem to accompany the movement of the suspended head, maintaining a graphic link with the figure below and making the scene more suggestive than openly macabre. The face preserves delicate features and a melancholy, contemplative expression, creating a fascinating contrast between beauty and the supernatural.

The protagonist wears an elaborate kimono characterized by extraordinary ornamental richness. Flowers, branches, and decorative motifs run across the fabric, while the belt and the many pleats of the garment give depth and volume to the figure. The circular fan held in the right hand completes the portrayal, reinforcing its aristocratic and traditional character.

Behind the figure opens a suggestive Japanese garden illuminated by the full moon. A small stream runs through the landscape, dominated by a curved bridge, while a traditional lantern and the silhouettes of Oriental architectures emerge among trees and vegetation. The night sky and clouds surrounding the moon contribute to a suspended, silent, almost dreamlike atmosphere.

On the left side of the composition, however, is the interior of a traditional dwelling, with wooden elements, a suspended lantern, and a vase containing flowering branches. The transition from the domestic setting to the exterior landscape creates depth and reinforces the sense that the scene unfolds during a seemingly tranquil night suddenly interrupted by a supernatural manifestation.

The contrast between the serenity of the landscape, the elegance of the protagonist, and the impossible anatomy of the floating head is particularly successful. The work does not rely solely on horror; it builds a subtler atmosphere in which grace, unease, and mystery coexist within the same image.

The monochromatic rendering in black and beige tones gives the tapestry an antique and timeless character. The extremely meticulous linework highlights the hairstyle, the kimono motifs, the architectures, the vegetation, and the reflections on the water, while the warm tonal background visually recalls the look of old oriental prints made on paper.
