Description from the seller
Large Cut Camphorwood Chest (88 cm) with Original Lock & Key – Hong Kong, circa 1950-1970
Beautiful and sturdy antique/vintage camphorwood chest, handcrafted in Hong Kong in the mid-20th century. The chest is richly decorated on the sides and lid with deeply carved relief representations of traditional Chinese junks, figures, pagodas, and landscape scenes, set in a stylish geometric diamond pattern.
The internal brass lock plate is marked with "HONG KONG" and the authentic maker’s mark. This piece is equipped with the original brass lock mechanism, the accompanying key, and the original removable inner tray — a complete set with original key and lock is rare for this type of chest!
What was the chest originally used for?
Camphorwood naturally has a wonderful, distinctive fresh smell. Originally, these chests were used by seafarers and merchant families to store precious fabrics, silk, garments, linens, and documents. The essential oils in camphorwood act as a natural protection against moths, insects, and moisture.
Versatile applications in modern interiors
Thanks to its generous dimensions and impressive carving, this chest is not only a collector’s item but also a functional eye-catcher in any interior:
Coffee Table / Living Room Table: Perfect as a unique coffee table in the living room.
Blanket / Storage Chest: Ideal at the foot of the bed for blankets, cushions, or clothing.
Stylish element: A beautiful decorative piece that adds warmth and character to both classic and modern eclectic interiors.
