Juvenalis of Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis (Aquinum (Latium), ca. 60 - † ?, between 133 and 140) was a great Roman poet, the last of the Latin satirists, who also gave satire its definitive form. The expressions Panem et circenses, "Bread and circuses" and Mens sana in corpore sano, "A healthy mind in a healthy body" are attributed to him.

Like his contemporary Tacitus, he has a clearly pessimistic view of Rome in the 1st century. His satires portray in a brutal, realistic manner the moral conditions in the capital under emperors Nero and Domitian. They attack the misbehavior, vices, abuses and excesses of a disintegrating Roman society. The fierceness of his pen is not matched in Latin literature. In his eyes, the previous generation bore responsibility for the current malaise, which he condemns as that of a country bumpkin who has become entangled in the metropolis and is convinced that he has landed in a dreadful milieu. His poetry sits between realism and rhetoric, bearing the mark of bitter irony, sarcasm even, fierce invectives and narrow pessimism. Juvenal's Satires reveal a deep aversion to the rich and the "winners" and a warm sympathy for the "losers", the poor and marginal.

After his death, Juvenal was soon forgotten. Only Christian moralists later revived him as an accuser of heathen depravity. In medieval monastic libraries he was read and copied frequently.

Aulus Persius Flaccus (34-62 AD) was a Latin satirist. At age 12 he came to Rome, where he studied under Remmius Palaemon, and from age 16 he was initiated into Stoic philosophy by the Stoic philosopher L. Annaeus Cornutus, of whom he became a devoted follower. He remained friends with Cornutus. Persius died young, at 28.
