Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). Philosophical Elements of the Citizen, a political treatise or the foundations of civil society are revealed. Amsterdam, Jean Blaeu, 1649, (31) ff., 246 pp., 144 pp. (8) ff.
A 12mo volume (150x100 mm), full calf, spine with raised bands, title-piece in morocco (period binding). Wear and rubbing on the boards and spine, loss on the lower part of the spine, headcap partially shaved, stamp on the title page. Interior fresh, with no foxing.
French original edition in a translation by Samuel de Sorbière; without the frontispiece but well complete with the engraving depicting Thomas Hobbes.
In this treatise, Hobbes sets forth the philosophical foundations of civil society, starting from the natural condition of men and the conflicts that arise from their interests and their will to preservation. He then examines the formation of political society, the origin and extent of sovereignty, the relations between the sovereign and the citizens, and then the questions relating to religion and ecclesiastical authority.
