Frank Baum - Complete Oz Books - Full Set of 14 "White Cover" Editions - 1956-1960

The "White Edition" of the Oz books is one of the most recognizable and beloved series among collectors. Below you will find a detailed description of the specific design and the history of these editions: The Spines: The most notable feature is the sleek, white-laminated spine with colorful, vertical illustrations. Many of the books show a large, prominent letter "Z" (from OZ) that the characters look at or dance around. No Dust Jackets: Unlike earlier editions, these books were issued without paper dust jackets. The full illustrations were printed directly on the white, linen-like hard cover. The Front: The front covers display large, colorful scenes based on the original designs from the very first editions at the beginning of the 20th century.

Introduced from 1964 by the traditional Oz publisher The Reilly & Lee Co.. The Graphic Designer: Although the characters were originally drawn by W.W. Denslow and John R. Neill, this specific book series and layout were designed by the renowned Oz artist Dick Martin. He modernized the old illustrations specifically for this sixties series. The Secret Joke (Collector’s Hint) Designer Dick Martin had a playful sense of humor. At the time, book historians were in heated debates about how to date old Oz books by the spelling of the ampersand (&) in the publisher’s name "Reilly & Lee". As an inside joke for collectors, Dick Martin placed on each of the 14 books in the White Edition a slightly different ampersand (&) at the bottom of the book spine. If you look closely at the books, you’ll see that no ampersand is exactly the same.
