Anatole France and Tigrane Polat, Le Puits de Sainte Claire, first edition (1908), tirage à 121 exemplaires, binding by Levitzky in demi-maroquin with corners, back nerves and gilt head, 176 pages, illustrated edition in French.
Description from the seller
Anatole France, Le Puits de Sainte-Claire.
Paris, Le Livre Contemporain, 1908. 4to, 176 pp.
Beautiful edition illustrated by Tigrane Polat, printed in 121 copies, here no. 36 printed for Jules Le Petit (1845-1915). 42 etchings, including 17 hors-texte, and 5 trial plates. All hors-texte plates are accompanied by captioned serpents, except one trial plate (the legend on these plates indicates only 'planche d'essai'). The trial plates seem to be present in all copies; our copy is therefore indeed complete with the 22 hors-texte plates. Printed in bistre, leather binding matching the imprint. The paper is a beautiful thick laid paper (no qualifier in the justification).
Provenance: Jules Le Petit (sale December 1917, part I, no. 3458). The book was still in sheets under a case.
Binding signed Levitzky, half-maroquin with corners, spine with ribs, gilded top, covers and spine preserved. One corner slightly rubbed, small staining on one rib.
Superb copy, perfectly bound by Levitzky.
