Elegant large ostrich feather evening fan with a honey amber translucent shaft and a monogram on the main rib, dating to circa 1890–1920, with its original red lily-pattern case and overall good condition for its age.
Description from the seller
Large evening ostrich-feather fan with monogram and case – Belle Époque, ca. 1890-1920
Elegant and scenographic large evening fan crafted in authentic ostrich feathers, dating most probably to the period between the late 19th and early 20th century.
The fan features a folding framework with a long honey/amber translucent handle, tortoiseshell-like in appearance. On the main rib is applied a small monogram, apparently depicting the letter “G”, enriched by small light decorative elements.
The large ostrich plumage is particularly striking, characterized by a delicate gradient from white/ivory to pink-peach. When opened it reaches about 67 cm, creating the broad silhouette typical of large evening and debutante fans used during the Belle Époque and the early decades of the 20th century.
The fan is accompanied by its antique molded case, covered with a repeated red fleur-de-lis motif on a cream background and with a protective interior.
The handle shows characteristics compatible with tortoiseshell materials used at the time; in the absence of specific analysis, the material is prudently described as tortoiseshell-effect translucent material and not definitively attributed to natural tortoise shell.
