Maurice Hamel, Le Salon de 1890, original edition published in 1890 in Paris, a 107-page illustrated livre bound in full red morocco by Petrus Ruban, 1/20 Japon paper with a suite of 24 engravings before the lettering, limited to 675 copies.
Description from the seller
Maurice Hamel, Le Salon de 1890.
Paris, Ludovic Baschet, sd [1890]. In-folio (33 x 24.5 cm), 107 pp.
Original edition, one of 28 copies on Japanese paper and more precisely one of 20 on Japanese with a suite of 24 engravings before the letter on Japanese paper (the other Japanese copies have the suite on satin or parchment). The work, besides its illustrated cover, comprises a very large number of engravings, namely:
26 engravings in the text, most in a single color (black, brownish), 2 in color
72 engravings hors-texte with legends
24 engravings hors-texte before the letter, each in a tone different from the tone of the caption
The work is complete with all its engravings. Each year, there were several Parisian salons, and each had a more classical publication in in-12 or in-8 format and, as here, sometimes a very luxurious large-format publication. This edition was thus printed in 675 copies: 28 on Japan and 647 on Hollande, the latter without a suite. The finest copies were then bound by the masters of the time, as here with Petrus Ruban.
Binding signed Petrus Ruban, full red morocco, very richly decorated, gilt edges on turn-ins. Some small scuffs, spine slightly browned.
Sumptuous copy, a work of great quality
