Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Chateaubriand; Raoul Serres, Les Martyrs, Paris, La Tradition, 1942, first edition in two large-format volumes, 249 and 267 pages, illustrated with 47 etchings by Raoul Serres, bound by Pierre-Lucien Martin in black morocco with corner decoration and gold head, a non‑numbered copy likely for collaborators or a tribute.
Description from the seller
François-René de Chateaubriand, The Martyrs.
Paris, La Tradition, 1942. 2 volumes, large quarto (28.6 x 23.5 cm), 249 pp & 267 pp.
Beautiful illustrated edition with 47 etchings by Raoul Serres, limited to 500 copies, the first 25 on japon, the others on Arches vellum. Ours is unnumbered and addressed to Raymond Quindriot, probably one of the 20 copies intended for collaborators or as a tribute. It seems that a Quindriot was a bookseller at that time.
Binding signed by Pierre-Lucien Martin, signed at the foot of the spine, half black morocco with corners, mosaic, head gilded, covers and spine preserved. Minor flaws.
It should be noted that the bird at the top of the spine changes direction between the two volumes, so that the birds look at each other when the volumes are placed side by side.
Stunning copy in a magnificent Martin binding.
