Description from the seller

Rare critical edition (the first had appeared posthumously in 1718 in Amsterdam) of Benedetto Menzini's twelve satires (1646-1704), in which he scourges Tuscan society, especially the aristocracy, the bourgeoisie, the clergy, and the Court of Cosimo III.

Under the Arcadian name of the "Accademico Immobile", the publisher of the volume and author of the Arguments and the Appendix is concealed as the Marquis Guasco of Alessandria, while his brother Francesco Eugenio is the author of the "Ragionamento di Alcisto Solaidio". Cf. Gamba, 669: "Edition held in esteem for the various notes added to it and taken from a text written by pen."

The Satire of Benedetto Menzini, Florentine poet, with notes by Abbot Rinaldo Maria Bracci..., Naples, Gennaro Rota Stampar Camerale, 1763.

PP.: (II), XII, LXXXII, 465, (I). COMPLETE, with a portrait in the frontispiece.

Copy still in sheets in the original state and with leaves partially unopened, in overall good/very good condition.

Nineteenth-century half-leather binding with marbled boards, surely recovered from another book. Missing the rear white guard leaf.

Seller's Story

I am always interested in purchasing individual works and/or entire libraries to help my bibliophile clients enrich their collections with rare and valuable pieces.
