A pair of hand-painted porcelain teapots with lids in a Meissen/Dresden-inspired style, dating to the late 19th century (ca. 1870–1900) from France (Paris, attributed to Edmé Samson or a contemporary), each about 11.5 cm high, 5.5 cm wide and 4 cm deep, in used condition with possible small missing parts, with both bodies intact but one lid has a damaged rose knop and a fine hairline inside.
Description from the seller
Pair of porcelain tea canisters with lids in the Meissen/Dresden style – 19th century (Paris / Edmé Samson ?)
Description
A particularly handsome and decorative pair of rectangular porcelain tea canisters (boîtes à thé) with accompanying lids, made in the second half of the 19th century in the 18th-century manner.
The tea canisters are flask-shaped with rounded corners and a curved shoulder. Each side features refined, hand-painted decor:
Front: A romantic, gallant scene of a loving couple in a landscape (inspired by Jean-Antoine Watteau and François Boucher).
Sides and back: Richly painted with multicolored floral bouquets and loose scattering blossoms.
Gilding: The scenes and corners are framed in exuberant rocaille cartouches with fretwork and tendrils in gold.
The base bears the well-known blue underglaze monogram with entwined L’en, the year letter 'A' and painter's mark 'c' – a faithful 19th-century interpretation of the early Sèvres/Vincennes mark from 1753.
