German school (XX) - Landschaft

This landscape painting in the late impressionist style captures a wide, summery hilly landscape with great atmospheric dynamism.

Image analysis & stylistic features

Composition: A protruding dirt road runs along the right edge of the image past a mighty deciduous tree deep into the scene. It guides the eye over gently undulating fields to a bluish-looking range of hills in the background.

Color scheme: The palette is dominated by bold blue and white tones of the broken clouds in the sky, reflected in the cool shades of the distant mountains. In the foreground, warm earth tones, greens and small red accents (possibly poppies) provide highlights.

Painting technique: The brushwork is notably thick and executed with a visible, strong brushstroke. Especially the furrows of the path and the cloud structures appear almost plastered, giving the painting a tangible texture.

Signature & frame: At the bottom right is the ligated monogram. The silvered wooden frame with a subtle patina stylistically pairs well with the cool color mood of the sky and suggests a creation in the first half of the 20th century.
