AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Antonio Maffei Carballo, (Havana 1885–Valladolid 1961). The Field (El Campo Grande, Valladolid).

Oil on canvas.

Signed and dated 1947 in the lower right corner.

Measurements: 102x90 cm. 89x78 cm.

Biography.

He studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. He took part in the preparatory exhibition of the Ibero-American Biennial of 1951, at the Palacio de Santa Cruz, and although not fond of public exhibitions of his work, he also showed his work in other places such as Vigo and Bilbao.

His painting evokes the most relevant traits of his personality: clarity, silence, discretion, without stridency, joy, absence of exasperated tensions, which manifest only in occasional drops of melancholy, and his lack of rhetoric and emphasis. Nothing could be further from what is typically found in the avant-garde trends of the 20th century.

A special note deserves his series of Valladolid views. Old corners that have since had their appearance altered or disappeared preserve in these delicate paintings a life that transcends the limits of a simple photographic document.

This work is published in the books:
BRASAS EGIDO, José Carlos: Antonio Maffei (exhibition. Banco de Bilbao-Valladolid, November 1983), Banco de Bilbao, Valladolid, 1983.

URREA, Jesús: Pintores de Valladolid (1890-1940), Caja de Ahorros Popular de Valladolid, Valladolid, 1985.
