Two-volume illustrated edition of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, in French, original language, hardcover with blue half-cloth binding and marbled boards, 977 pages in total, published circa 1890 by SN.
Description from the seller
Fascinating two-volume illustrated set of one of the great novels of adventure, vengeance and social transformation in 19th-century French literature, originally published in serial form between 1844 and 1846 and built around the extraordinary destiny of Edmond Dantès -
At the beginning of the tale, Dantès appears as a simple, brave and promising man, returned to Marseille after a voyage at sea and about to marry Mercédès, the young woman he loves, while being destined to become captain of the ship Pharaon -
This success, however, arouses the jealousy of several characters, notably Danglars, who covets his position, and Fernand Mondego, in love with Mercédès, while the political context of the Restoration and the return of Napoleon Bonaparte give the conspirators the means to turn a personal rivalry into a political accusation -
Alexandre Dumas - The Count of Monte Cristo - SD (circa 1890) - Vols I and II -
Volume 1: 478 pages. Volume 2: 499 pages.
Good condition bindings, volumes in their original half-blue cloth, marbled boards, wear from use, a few minor defects on the covers, collapsed headpieces, worn corners, speckled edges, smooth spine, gilded titles, author’s name and volume numbers on red leather panels -
Good interior condition, scattered stains and marks, volumes enriched with fine black engravings both in text and out of text, endpapers in acceptable condition, a pleasant set -
