Three-volume rare edition of Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon’s Œuvres de Crébillon, a French reedition published by Libraires Associés in 1772, bound in full laurel leather, in French, original language, 1010 pages, with Bon condition interior and exterior.
Description from the seller
Rare three-volume set of this edition that gathers the essential literary output of one of the most representative French dramatists of the first half of the 18th century, known as Crébillon père to distinguish him from his son, Claude-Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon, a celebrated writer of the Enlightenment.
Born in Dijon in 1674 and later becoming a member of the Académie française, Crébillon mainly distinguished himself in tragedy, but his œuvre is distinguished by a particular tone that sometimes distances him from the classical tragedy of Corneille and Racine.
The plays gathered in this edition bear witness to a theatre strongly marked by violent passions, power struggles, political intrigues, jealousy, vengeance, ambition and moral dilemmas, with characters often confronted with extreme situations where individual feelings clash with the demands of honor, reason, or duty.
