Comprend le fameux Contra Haereses, otherwise known under the name Panarion, which means “bread-bin” or “box of remedies/medicine chest.” Epiphanius chose it to indicate that it is an antidote against the “poison” of heresies.

The work opens with pre-Christian “heresies” (barbarism, Scythianism, Hellenism, Judaism and their philosophical and sectarian ramifications), then treats of Christian heresies, of the Gnostics (Simo n ians, Basilideans, Valentinians, etc.) up to contemporary controversies. It also preserves precious fragments of lost texts (Judeo‑Christian gospels, Gnostic writings, etc.).

Epiphanius is a fiery polemicist, sometimes excessive, little subtle theologically (some historians deem him “limited”), but extremely well informed and influential. He relies on Scripture, tradition, and earlier works (Irenaeus, Hippolytus, etc.), while adding firsthand information. His tone is often virulent, moralizing, and not charitable toward his opponents.

Edition revised and enlarged of the sacred observations of Jacques de Billy (Jacobus Billius, Abbot of Saint‑Michel‑en‑l’Erm, 1535‑1581), notably enriched by the Physiologus and several homilies.
