Item Description
Offered here is a Bizen ware sake set comprising a tokkuri (sake decanter) and a guinomi (sake cup), both created by the potter 吉延英秀 Yoshinobu Eishuu (1923- ). The set is housed in its original signed wooden box (tomobako), inscribed with the title and the artist's seal.
The tokkuri displays the characteristic unglazed, high-fired surface of Bizen stoneware, with rich variations of reddish-brown, ash-grey, and iridescent tones produced by wood-firing without the use of glaze. A gently undulating, hand-worked body gives the piece an organic, tactile presence, and the base carries an incised artist's mark. The accompanying guinomi echoes the same earthy palette and unglazed finish, with visible throwing lines on the exterior and a smooth interior surface.
This set makes an attractive addition for collectors of Japanese studio ceramics or Bizen ware specifically, and is equally suited to display or practical use as a sake vessel pairing.
Artist Profile
Yoshinobu Eishuu (吉延英秀) was born in 1923 in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan; his elder brother was the fellow potter Oi Itsuo (大井逸吾). After returning from military service following the Second World War, Eishuu moved to Osaka and worked in other trades before entering the ceramics business as a merchant from 1966. Around 1970 he travelled extensively through the historic pottery regions of Tamba, Shigaraki, Tokoname, and Seto to study ceramic techniques, ultimately establishing his own kiln in 1975 through self-directed training. He is recognised in the Bizen ware trade as a bukko sakka (物故作家, a deceased artist), and his tokkuri, tea wares, and zodiac figurines continue to appear regularly at Japanese auction houses and are sought after in the secondary market.
Size
Tokkuri: Height 12.5 cm, Width 7.5 cm
Guinomi: Height 4.5 cm, Width 6.3 cm
Weight
Tokkuri: 185 g
Guinomi: 90 g
Condition
Both pieces have been visually inspected with no chips, cracks, or notable damage observed. The fine surface fissures and textural variation visible on the tokkuri's body are consistent with the natural clay separation and ash-glaze effects typical of traditional Bizen wood-firing, rather than damage.
