2. Description
Interesting academic drawing from the early 20th century, signed and dated 1915, by Darius Vilàs (1880-1950). The work gathers several studies of the male nude resolved with a bold, synthetic line, focused on anatomical structure, volume, and torsion of the body.
The composition presents several figures or fragments of figures distributed across the surface: a seated nude in profile, several torsos, and a standing figure viewed partially, forming a study sheet of clear formative character and direct observation.
This is a piece especially attractive for its spontaneity, workshop value, and notable graphic force, highly representative of drawing from life and academic practice of the figure.
3. Stylistic and compositional analysis
The sheet clearly follows a logic of academic sketching, where the artist tests poses, foreshortenings, and muscular tensions without seeking a closed, unitary scene, but rather an accumulation of partial studies with strong plastic value.
The drawing stands out for a nervous, confident line, quick shading through cross-hatching, and an effective combination of contour and wash/mark. The anatomical structure is treated with a marked constructive intent, especially in the neck, shoulders, thorax, and limbs.
The seated nude on the left acts as the main figure and provides visual stability to the composition, while the central torsos and the right-hand figure introduce rhythm, variety, and dynamism. The light touches reinforce volumes and add luminescent vitality, intensifying the expressive character of the sheet.
4. Psychological dimension
More than describing specific individuals, the work focuses on the body as a plastic problem. It bears an analytic, almost sculptural view of human anatomy. The beauty of the piece lies precisely in its immediacy, in its status as a living study, and in the intensity with which the artist observes, synthesizes, and builds the figure.
That direct life-drawing character gives it authenticity and makes the work a particularly eloquent testimony of the artist's graphic thinking.
5. Signature and authorship hypothesis
In the lower right corner there is an inscription read as “D. Vilàs,” accompanied by the date 1915. The reading is compatible with the Catalan artist Darius Vilàs, active in the early decades of the 20th century.
From a stylistic point of view, the work reasonably fits a Catalan environment with academic training and noucentist or postmodern sensibilities, where the study of the nude and structural synthesis occupied a relevant place.
For prudence, commercially and academically, the work can be catalogued as:
Darius Vilàs i Fernández (1880-1950)
6. Other points of interest
The work is of interest not only decoratively but also documentarily, preserving the intimate and workmanlike character of a study sheet. This type of piece is especially attractive to collectors of drawing, works on paper, and Catalan art from the early 20th century.
It also stands out for the balance between spontaneity and constructive solidity, as well as for the chromatic nobility of the aged paper and the expressive strength of the strokes.
7. Shipping and conditions
The work will be shipped by a professional specialized company, with careful packaging, a custom-made box, and foam protections to ensure proper conservation during transport.
International shipping is available.
Any potential shipping surcharges, especially for large formats or destinations outside the European Union, will be borne by the buyer.
The frame is offered as a gift and is included but not considered an essential part of the auction value; therefore, no claims will be accepted for it.
