Impressive still life with an exuberant bouquet of flowers, a porcelain vase and a small sculpture of two putti or cupids, a work by the French artist Solange Devienne (1894–1961). She was a painter and watercolourist born at the end of the 19th century, whose artistic production developed in the first half of the 20th century. She notably specialized in still life painting and bodegones, highlighting her detailed representations of bouquets and vases with flowers. Her works stand out for their harmonious and delicate compositions, often in large formats and with a classical realism.
At the center of the composition rises a large bouquet of roses with rich chromatic depth. It presents the characteristic style of the genre to which it belongs, realistic and meticulous, which gradually gained weight in Art History. Originating in antiquity and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, the still life gives the artist more freedom of composition than other pictorial genres such as landscape or portraiture. Before 1700, they often contained religious and allegorical symbolism related to the objects depicted. Also known as still lifes, they typically feature animals, flowers, fruits, foods, plants… Their development is set against the backdrop of growing appreciation for painting and the explosion of interest in naturalism and imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century.
This work expresses its theatrical character and some other remnants of the Baroque, for example in the back cloth, the use of chiaroscuro, and the arrangement of the elements. It does not seek merely visual delight but invites the viewer to contemplate the passage of time, delving into the fleeting beauty of nature, though in a gentler way than the classical Baroque still lifes.
