Two Staffordshire animal figurines in glazed earthenware from the United Kingdom, dating to around 1850–1900, in good used condition with small signs of aging and stains, featuring craquelé and a repaired broken paw.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

These Staffordshire dogs are also colloquially known as (I’m trying to phrase this politely without being offensive) prostitution dogs.

With these dogs in the window, ladies who earned extra income from prostitution pretended they were selling souvenirs. They were placed in the window of the working ladies, and if the lady had a gentleman visitor, the dogs were turned with their gaze inward to indicate that the lady was occupied.

The figurines are more than 100 years old and show wear to the paint. They were hand-painted, so no two dogs are alike. Craquelure is visible, and one of the paws is broken and repaired, as visible in the photos.

I’ve marked the condition as good, but it sits somewhere between good and fair: given their age they are still in good condition, no pieces missing, but of course the paw has been repaired.

The hole in the back I looked up and apparently it was there so they wouldn’t crack during firing.

They are thought to be from around 1880, but this is an estimate and by no means certain.

Guaranteed conversation starter!
