Description from the seller
A beautiful and historically valuable English fusee pocket watch ( verge fusee) from the late 18th century (c. 1780–1790), made by the respected London watchmaker James Williams.
This pocket watch is a splendid example of early English craftsmanship. The movement’s rear plate is fully hand-engraved and bears the signature “Jas. Williams, London” along with the unique early serial number 1552.
The mechanism features a fusee drive (fusee cone with chain) to keep the power constant. The large, round brass balance bridge/seat is breathtakingly pierced and beautifully decorated with Baroque scrollwork and the iconic engraved “Grotesque Mask” (little face). This embodies the traditional quality hallmark of luxury English watches from this period.
The watch is in fully working condition, which is very rare for a movement over 220 years old. The mechanism ticks and runs smoothly after winding from the rear with a key-wind.
