Title: Gray and Beige Abstraction

Technique: Oil on canvas

Artist: Terry Haass (1923-2016)

Work size: 24 × 33 cm

Condition: Good condition

Terry Haass (1923-2016), born Terezie Goldmannová in Czechoslovakia, is a multidisciplinary artist of Jewish origin, naturalized French in 1963. She fled Nazism in the late 1930s to settle first in Paris, where she began studies in art and art history. The advance of World War II drove her to exile in New York in 1941 thanks to a scholarship at the Art Students League. In 1946, she joined the famous Atelier 17 directed by Stanley William Hayter, an experimental structure of which she would take the lead in 1950 while teaching graphic arts at Brooklyn College. Returning definitively to Paris in the 1950s, she befriended the great masters of the era such as Picasso or Léger. A complete and curious artist, she distinguished herself in both abstract-creative painting and sculpture, design and modern engraving, a discipline whose technical boundaries she pushed. Passionate about ancient civilizations, she simultaneously pursued archaeology, a universe that would deeply influence the motifs and textures of her visual works. Very close to painter Anna-Eva Bergman, she will leave a substantial portion of her collection to the Hartung-Bergman Foundation. Her poetic and geometric works, regularly presented on the art market, bear witness to a life devoted to visual experimentation.
