AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Oil on canvas, 19th century, depicting a young peasant woman with her sheaf of wood, on a country path.

Italian School signed at the bottom "L.Cima"

Luigi Cima:

He was born on January 5, 1860, in Villa di Villa, near Belluno, in the Venetian Alps. After technical studies in Feltre, he joined the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, where he trained notably under Giacomo Favretto, Jacopo d’Andrea, Pompeo Marino Molmenti and Guglielmo Ciardi.

He developed genre and landscape painting, particularly devoted to rural life in the Belluno region, to peasant scenes, to animals and mountain landscapes, but also to scenes of Venetian life and portraiture. His work is characterized by a realism attentive to light and atmospheric effects, in the context of late 19th-century Venetian painting.

Cima regularly exhibited in Italy and abroad: in Monaco in 1889 and 1891, then at the first Venice Biennales in 1895 and 1897, where he presented notably Vacche alla pozza, Nevicata and I fabbri. He also participated in exhibitions in Milan, Turin, Florence and Verona.

From the early 20th century, he gradually withdrew from the official art scene and returned to live in his native village, where he continued to paint until his death, on January 1, 1944 in Belluno.

Good overall condition with wear and dirt.

Original wooden frame with gilded stucco.

Frameless dimensions: 38 x 25 cm
