NEO-TOKYO APOCALYPSE

This triptych concentrates on the most mysterious and monumental side of AKIRA: Neo-Tokyo itself.

Kaneda’s motorcycle, futuristic architecture, capsule imagery, astronomical forms and immense spheres of energy appear against dense cityscapes, creating three interconnected visions of a civilization approaching technological and psychological overload.

The human figure becomes deliberately small against the scale of the city and the unknown forces surrounding it. This contrast gives the compositions their dystopian tension: humanity exists inside a technological landscape that has become larger, faster and increasingly impossible to control.

Visually, the series draws from battered manga pages, 1980s Japanese science-fiction advertising, photocopied counterculture graphics, underground publications and analog printing errors.

Heavy black areas collide with white paper, coarse halftones, scratches, ink loss, distressed borders and oversized Japanese characters. These imperfections are intentionally preserved as part of the work’s character, reinforcing the feeling of discovering rare printed material from an alternate Neo-Tokyo.

Displayed together, the three artworks create an almost cinematic progression — machine, city and catastrophe.

For collectors of AKIRA and cyberpunk culture, the set emphasizes not only the immediately recognizable imagery of Otomo’s universe, but also the broader themes that made it so influential: technological anxiety, urban expansion, uncontrollable power, social instability and the collision between humanity and the future.

With only 4 unique variations in the edition, this triptych is conceived as a particularly limited collector’s interpretation of one of cyberpunk’s foundational worlds.

THE ARTIST

Artist and designer Æ holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Design and Multimedia Technologies (Barcelona, 2004), together with a Bachelor’s Degree in East Asian Studies.

His practice combines Japanese visual culture, retro-futurism, underground manga, experimental printing and early digital aesthetics.

Working with a deliberately reduced monochrome palette, Æ uses extreme contrast, fragmented imagery and weathered surfaces to evoke objects that seem simultaneously contemporary and archival — visual artifacts from futures that never happened.

His artworks are held in private collections in more than 30 countries worldwide, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Æ’s work was reviewed by exhibition curator Thierry Fournier (Artnoises):

“Collected AE (XX), it comes down to wanting, breaking, transgressing, an invisible border... the work becomes a ticket... for an emotional teleportation that we live and see in ‘Black and white’...”
— Thierry Fournier (Artnoises) ★★★★★

* Photographs aim to represent the artworks as accurately as possible. Slight variations may occur depending on lighting and monitor settings.
** Immediate shipping after payment, carefully packed with appropriate insurance and tracking.
*** Frames and decorative objects shown in presentation photographs are for display inspiration only. The artworks are sold unframed. Combined shipping is available when purchasing several artworks.
