Reyer (or Reijer) Catharinus Murman (1908-1981), painter, watercolorist, and draughtsman from Geldermalsen. His father Goos (1869-1945) descended from a wealthy family of landowners in West Betuwe, was also a painter, and sent his son to the Art Academy in Den Bosch and Antwerp.
Despite his noble background, he chose the life of an artist at a young age, a choice that would determine his life. His son Reyer (1908-1981) followed in his footsteps and grew into one of the leading artists of the Betuwe, alongside Jan van Anrooy and Piet Mulder, known as the Great Three Betuwse artists. He was a student of Isidoor Opsomer and Piet Slager Jr.
Reyer Murman was also fond of sailing and first traveled all over the Netherlands with his parlevinker and later with the clipper.
In the autumn of 2024, a book about the work and life of Reyer Murman appeared.
The painting is in good condition; the frame needs replacing.
