AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Very beautiful oil on canvas by one of the major representatives of Flemish animism.

Albert Van Dyck occupies an important place in Belgian painting of the 20th century. His work, deeply personal and introspective, gives particular prominence to the figures of children and young girls, as well as to the landscapes of the Campine. His path leads him from the Antwerp Academy to a painting gradually freed from the dominant Expressionism of his early years, to evolve toward a more sensitive and intimate pictorial writing.

Based in Schilde from 1931, Van Dyck finds there a major source of inspiration. He develops a body of work today held in several Belgian public collections. The Albert Van Dyck Museum in Schilde is entirely dedicated to him and houses an important portion of his œuvre; his paintings are also in the collections of the KMSKA in Antwerp, the MSK in Ghent, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

This Portrait of a Young Girl fits particularly well into this universe where Van Dyck attaches importance to the silent presence of the model and to her interiority.

The work is presented in an elegant double antique frame. The reverse preserves several especially interesting elements: workshop notes “Atelier Van Dyck,” title, catalog number 126, as well as two old labels mentioning the artist and the technique.

Dimensions of the canvas: 50 × 40 cm
