Description from the seller
DUBIA MILITARIA: RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE TREATISE ON MILITARY SOLDIERS' MORAL CONSCIENCE
ABSTRACT
Rare first edition of one of the most interesting seventeenth-century treatises devoted to morality applied to military life. Francisco Cespedes, regular Teatine priest, addresses numerous concrete and controversial cases related to soldiers’ conduct, warfare, plunder, desertion, obligations toward the sovereign, and confession. The work is expressly conceived as a text necessary for military confessors and useful to scholars of moral theology. At the end is included a copy of the letter from Don Martín Manrique de Padilla to his son Juan, with advice on military life.
REASONS FOR COLLECTING / WHY TO BUY
RARITY OF BIBLIOGRAPHY – First edition of an extremely rare work, for which Palau reports not having been able to see a copy, based on a prior indication by Nicolás Antonio.
MILITARY AND MORAL THEOLOGY – Combines the history of military culture with Catholic moral case law of the Seventeenth Century, with particular attention to soldiers’ conscience problems.
TEXT FOR MILITARY CONFESSORS – The work is explicitly defined on the title page as opus confessoribus militum necessarium and collects legal and moral issues intended for military chaplains.
HISTORICAL INTEREST – The volume documents the relationship between military discipline, Christian morality, and law in the context of Catholic armies of the modern era.
MARKET VALUE
Differences in preservation, completeness, provenance, and binding quality strongly influence the assessment, which sits between 600 and 1,000 euros.

FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR
Dubia conscientiae militaria à diversis proposita & resoluta a P. D. Francisco Cespedes.
Mediolani, Ex Officina Typographica Georgii Rollae, 1643.
Auctore Francisco Cespedes.
CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
The work belongs to the seventeenth-century production of manuals designed to address conscience cases connected with war and the life of soldiers. Cespedes examines issues where law, moral theology, and military discipline overlap, offering answers to concrete or hypothetical cases. Contemporary scholarly literature identifies the volume as one of the texts specifically aimed at the confessors of armies and host armies. Among the topics treated is also the problem of confessing by a soldier condemned to death who does not know the priest’s language, a case addressed through comparison with earlier theological tradition.
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Francisco Cespedes was a Spanish cleric of the Order of the Regular Clerics Teatini. His activity also developed in Milan, where in 1630 he joined the Teatine congregation. His body of work includes moral theology and canon law, with particular attention to practical problems of religious and military life. His Dubia conscientiae militaria represents one of his works most closely linked to case law applied to a military environment.
PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
First edition, published in Milan in 1643. The colophon reads: “Mediolani, Ex Officina Typographica Georgij Rollae, 1643. Sub signo Sanctae Cæciliae.” Ancient bibliography and modern catalogs record the edition with [8], 199, [1] pages and movable signature A–Y⁴, Z⁸, AA⁴. The rarity of the first edition is confirmed by the scarcity of registered copies and by Palau’s observations, who cites it on the basis of Nicolás Antonio without having seen a copy directly.
