Description from the seller
Tenhenoboru 天へ昇る (てんへのぼる) | Akiyama Iwao 秋山巌 (あきやまいわお)
This work is based on a haiku by Santoka Taneda, a haiku poet active during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.
"Tefutefu uraura ten he noboruka"
This haiku depicts a butterfly fluttering high into the sky in warm spring or early summer weather, as if being absorbed into heaven, overlapping with his own drifting soul and the boundary between life and death.
Iwao Akiyama interpreted the scenery of the butterfly rising high into the sky as a celestial maiden, representing the transience of the butterfly's short life.
This work is a hand-colored black monochrome woodblock print.
Japanese paper is lined on the back of the work.
