ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
José Rafael Mijares was a Venezuelan painter linked to folk art and to a magical-religious style of painting. According to a profile published about artists from Puerto Cabello, he spent part of his childhood in the San Millán neighborhood, debuted in an art exhibition in 1986, at 29 years old, and received a special mention from the jury.
His work developed with a strong symbolic and emotional charge, and is identified with magical-religious themes. He also participated in exhibitions in Caracas and in the states of Trujillo, Miranda and Aragua, which shows that he had presence outside his city of origin.
The same source indicates that his childhood in San Millán, an Afro-descendant community, could have been an important cultural influence on his artistic formation. In addition, he was remembered in a posthumous tribute within a plastic arts hall held in 2022, as recognition of his career.
