Description from the seller
Splendid and highly detailed vintage Indonesian painting belonging to the renowned Ubud School (Bali), dating roughly to the 1960s. The work, rendered in a fascinating panoramic format, depicts a traditional Balinese Hindu ceremonial procession (Odalan temple festival or Ngaben ritual) moving toward a sacred area. The composition is extraordinarily dense and perfectly embodies the concept of horror vacui typical of classical Balinese art, where every single millimeter of space is filled with a lush tropical jungle and finely drawn human figures in their ceremonial sarongs. Artist: Signed at the bottom left by the master K. Ujung (Ketut Ujung). Provenance: Banjar Kutuh, Ubud, Bali (Indonesia). The locality and the island are explicitly indicated by the author under the signature (“Kutuh / Ubud Bali”). Technique: Traditional painting executed entirely by hand in black ink and glazes of tempera/organic pigments on prepared cotton canvas. The work presents a splendid palette of warm colors dominated by earth tones, ochre, brown and beige, characteristic of pigments used in Bali in the mid-twentieth century before the advent of acrylics. Era: Second half of the 20th century (circa 1960s). An excellent collectible piece, ideal for enthusiasts of Southeast Asian art, Oriental art and ethnographic art.
