Description from the seller
Seascape painting "Twilight in Larmor" - 2026
This painting signed Yves Decaudan depicts a typical Breton coastal landscape at dusk.
The scene is divided horizontally into two large parts. The upper half shows a row of traditional Breton houses (gables marked, imposing chimneys) lining a small harbor. In the background, a wide rocky band or breakwater protrudes into the sea beneath a band of brightly lit clouds. The lower half is occupied by the water where a few anchored boats rest.
The work is dominated by a deep ultramarine blue that envelops the sky, the sea, and the roofs of the houses. This dark background is contrasted by saturated warm touches: bright orange, pink, red and yellow in the sky and reflected on the water, as well as pure green on the façades.
Brushwork and texture: The stroke is broad, synthetic and expressive. The outlines are underscored by dark lines and the pictorial material is applied generously in large flat areas or bold brushstrokes.
The aesthetic approach directly follows in the tradition of Fauvism and Expressionism. The artist does not seek to reproduce the exact reality of the light, but uses color as a vector of raw emotion.
All the dynamism of the painting rests on the contrast between the cold tones—the dominant blue—and the warm tones—the pink, orange and red of the sunset. This opposition creates an atmosphere that is both peaceful and theatrical.
The twilight light seems to set the sky ablaze and breaks up on the surface of the dark water in the form of light horizontal touches of orange and red, guiding the viewer’s gaze from the foreground to the background.
Painting by the Breton artist Yves Decaudan - 1954
Canvas on display at the Paris Autumn Salon - 2022
Yves Decaudan’s work is part of a colorful figurative tradition, very influenced by Fauvism and the Pont-Aven school, with a particular attachment to coastal scenes of Brittany.
His works regularly depict moments of calm, reading, or outdoor reverie in a maritime setting where time seems suspended.
The artist’s work is characterized by expressive and poetic figuration, driven by a keen sense of color and the synthesis of forms. The artist favors fields of pure, intense colors — such as this deep blue contrasted with the brilliant red — creating an immediate, luminous visual tension.
The elements of the decor are outlined and simplified, moving toward the essential without dwelling on anatomical detail or strict realism, which brings his work closer to Fauvism or art posters. His subjects, often solitary and maritime, convey an impression of stillness, serenity, or suspended daydreaming.
Through backgrounds worked with texture or studded with light touches, he establishes a poetic depth rather than a geometric one.
Paintings exhibited in numerous private collections in Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania,
