Statue, St Petrus - 37.5 cm - Wood

Beautiful sacred Saint Peter (Saint Pierre) statue, it is a fascinating example of religious folk art. Probably France circa 1900-1920

Although Peter is traditionally most recognizable by his keys to the gates of heaven, in early Christian, Romanesque and medieval traditions he is also regularly depicted with a scroll or gospel book to symbolize his role as apostle and foundation of the early church.

Saint Peter: The Scroll: While later Baroque statues almost exclusively emphasize the metal keys, this design returns to the classical tradition in which Peter holds the law or the Gospels.

The Beard and the Garment: Peter is almost always depicted with a full, short beard and curly hair, which is accurately rendered in the face of this sculpture.

Styling and Age: The compact form, the tight vertical folds and the flat, disk-shaped halo (aureole) often indicate a style inspired by Romanesque or early Gothic art. Many of these monoxyle (carved from a single piece of wood) figures originate from French, German or Flemish monastery workshops or regional folk art.

Size: about 37.5 cm high

Condition: in good condition with minimal signs of wear.
