Description from the seller
Original painting – Acrylic on canvas, 70 x 100 cm
Shipped rolled without frame
With “Liminal Landscape I” a landscape emerges that consciously moves between representational and abstract. The vertically towering birch trunks are still clearly recognizable as a motif, but they gradually dissolve from their naturalistic function and become lines, surfaces, structures, and rhythmic placements within the composition.
The English term “liminal” derives from the Latin limen – “threshold” –. It describes a state of in-betweenness: a moment in which something familiar loses its distinct form and a new perception becomes possible. This transition is exactly what the work thematizes. The viewer recognizes a forest, yet is at the same time invited not to see it only as a landscape, but as a sequence of light, material, rhythm, and space.
The bright, subdued color palette of white, gray, beige, and earth tones creates a quiet, almost transported atmosphere. In contrast are the dark incisions of the bark structures and the clearly visible gestural brushstrokes. The surface of the canvas thus becomes an essential part of the painting: color not only describes something, but becomes material and expression.
Historically, the work stands in the development of modern and contemporary landscape painting, where the landscape increasingly freed itself from its function as a faithful depiction. While modernism already transformed external reality in favor of perception, mood, and painterly form, Liminal Landscape I continues this idea into a contemporary, abstracting visual language.
The vertical arrangement of the trunks almost resembles an abstract grid, while the organic bark structures oppose this grid with their irregularity and liveliness. Nature and abstraction, order and chance, surface and space enter into a dialogue with one another.
The title “Liminal Landscape” thus describes not only the depicted motif but also the true character of the painting: It is a landscape on the threshold of abstraction. What initially appears to be a quiet birch forest, upon closer inspection becomes a play of vertical forms, light, and painterly materiality.
