Description from the seller
Original painting – acrylic on canvas, 70 × 100 cm
Shipped rolled, unframed
Liminal Landscape_02 shows a landscape in transition – not as a concrete topographical view, but as an atmospheric perception of space, light and nature.
A softly rising meadow occupies the lower part of the image and leads the eye into a densely packed forest. Bright greens and whites meet deep, almost black areas of the forest. In between, a bright sky space opens up, giving the composition depth and at the same time a nearly otherworldly, quiet atmosphere.
Characteristically, the surface is treated expressively. The color is not used exclusively to describe individual trees, leaves or grasses. Instead, from brushstrokes, overlaps, smudges and free applications, independent structures emerge. The landscape thus becomes increasingly a dialogue of color, movement, light and materiality.
The title “Liminal Landscape” refers to the term liminal – a threshold or transitional state. The painting rests exactly on such a threshold: between recognizing a concrete landscape and its dissolution into a more abstract, subjective visual language. The forest is still experienceable as forest, the meadow readable as a landscape space – at the same time the individual forms begin to dissolve into painterly gestures and fields of color.
Landscape painting gradually detached itself in the course of modernity from the aim of a naturalistic depiction of a place. In particular, the Impressionists, Expressionists and the subsequent abstract painting turned landscape into an experimental field for color, perception and painterly expression. In the 20th century this gave rise to a close link between landscape and abstraction.
Even expressionism used nature not only as a motif to be depicted, but as a starting point for a subjective and emotionally shaped visual language. Later, artists of Abstract Expressionism and related currents linked landscape experience with gestural painting and a increasingly free handling of form and color.
Liminal Landscape_02 stands in this art-historical field of tension: The landscape remains a starting point and recognizable reference, yet is transformed through the painting process. Especially the large, horizontal movements of the meadow and the densely structured forest create a dialogue between calm and dynamism, concreteness and abstraction.
Thus the landscape is not a documentary representation of a specific place, but an inner landscape space – a visual experience of light, depth, movement and atmosphere.
