Iker Casillas is a Spanish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent the majority of his career with Real Madrid C. F. and the Spain national team, and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in football history.
He began his sporting career at Real Madrid C. F., first in the youth ranks and from 1999 to 2015 in the first team, serving as captain between 2010 and 2015. He is the second-most-capped player in the club's history, with a total of 725 appearances, behind Raúl González with 741. From 2019 to 2020, due to an acute myocardial infarction, he was part of the FC Porto coaching staff as a precaution during his recovery until his retirement in August 2020.
He was an international with Spain from 2000 to 2016, serving as captain from 2006 to 2016. He is the second-most-capped Spanish international in history (behind Sergio Ramos with 180) and fifteenth worldwide with 167. He captained his national team, being crowned continental champion in 2008 and 2012 and World Champion in 2010, thereby achieving the first-ever national teams' treble.
For five years he was considered by FIFA and UEFA to be the best goalkeeper in the world, through his awards in the FIFPro World XI and in the UEFA Team of the Year. IFFHS also chose him for five consecutive years as the best goalkeeper in the world, from 2008 to 2012. Likewise, he was uninterruptedly included between 2007 and 2012 in the final Ballon d'Or candidates list.
