Technique: Japanese woodblock print
Artist: Mitsuoki TOSA 土佐光起 (1617–1691)
Title: From Tale of Genji series: "Asagao (The Morning Glory)"

Tale of Genji series "Asagao (The Morning Glory)";
Princess Asagao is a noblewoman whom Hikaru Genji pursued throughout his life—starting in his teens—yet who consistently rejected his advances. As rumors of Genji’s obsession with her spread through society, his principal wife, Murasaki-no-ue, feels deep jealousy and anxiety regarding both her own position and the state of their relationship.
Genji gazed with Murasaki-no-ue upon the garden, now buried in falling snow. The moon shone clear and cold in the sky. The shrubs in the front garden drooped beneath
the snow; the water seemed to sob as it flowed; the ice upon the pond struck a chill to the heart. Genji sent the young maidens out into the garden to roll snowballs. Their lively, frolicking figures, illuminated by the bright moonlight, were charming to behold.

The woodblock print is in excellent condition.

This print is a recent edition, printed from original woodblocks created during the Meiji period based on a painting by Tosa Mitsuoki from the Edo period. The printing was carried out by Mr. Saji, a master printer in Kyoto, who hand-printed the work in the same manner as it was originally produced at Meiji era.
