Description:
Beautiful and old score of Romeo and Juliet, an opera in five acts by Charles Gounod, to a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré.
Paris edition published by Choudens Publisher, rue Saint-Honoré, 265, near l’Assomption, dated 1867, the same year as the opera’s premiere in Paris.
Vocal score for voice and piano, arranged by Hector Salomon.
The work preserves its remarkable title page engraved and richly adorned, as well as the printed dedication:
“À Sa Majesté Charles XV, Roi de Suède & de Norvège”
The copy also bears, on the title page, an old publisher’s mark/signature related to Choudens, located near the mention “Traduction réservée.” This element is visible in the photographs and constitutes a particularly interesting detail of this copy.
The score notably includes the historical cast of Romeo and Juliet, with the names of the performers of the time, as well as an old catalog of Choudens’ publications bearing the date 1867.
