Pierre Soulages, born December 24, 1919 in Rodez (Aveyron) and died October 25, 2022 in Nîmes (Gard), was a French painter and engraver.

Associated since the late 1940s with abstract art, at one time close to action painting and lyrical abstraction, he works outside any group and his work escapes any collective theoretical positioning. Particularly known for his use of reflections of black color, which he calls “noir-lumière” or “outrenoir,” he can nonetheless be regarded as one of the principal representatives of informal painting.

Very early, he achieved international success by standing out in two countries in particular: Germany and the United States. He was quickly appreciated by a majority of collectors and received support from several important figures in the American art world, during its mid-1950s transformation, such as art dealer Samuel M. Kootz. His paintings thus entered the collections of the greatest European and American museums from the start of his career.

In over sixty years of activity, he established himself as one of the great innovators of modern painting and one of the most prolific, creating more than 1,730 paintings on canvas, 600 paintings on paper, 120 prints (etchings, lithographs, serigraphs) as well as the 104 stained glass windows of the Sainte-Foy abbey church in Conques.
