Third edition.
A fine work of 19th-century popular science devoted to physical geography, the formation and representation of the globe, the continents, seas, natural phenomena, volcanoes, polar regions, etc.
This third edition includes 181 vignettes drawn notably by Karl Girardet and Lebreton, as well as 20 maps of physical geography. 596 pages.
The work is particularly interesting for its abundant scientific and geographical imagery. Notably the spectacular color frontispiece depicting the eruption of Vesuvius, as well as several color maps, including the map titled The Earth according to Strabo visible in the photographs.
Binding: beautiful old leather binding in black; spine with raised bands richly ornamented with multiple lines and gilded frames. Title and author’s name gilded on the back.
Condition: very good overall. Binding solid and the gilded decoration still well present. The illustrations and maps photographed still display very beautiful colors.
