Description from the seller

This original work by Bart Hamelink, titled Where Were You, tells a story about absence, longing, and still going on.

Two figures stand literally and emotionally apart from each other. The handwritten texts such as “Still here”, “I stayed quiet, not weak” and “Where were you” give the work a personal and emotional charge. It’s about someone who stayed standing and held their ground, while the one who was needed was not there.

The raw black-and-white background, loose brushstrokes and small accents of color reinforce the sense of distance and vulnerability. At the same time, there is strength in the work: being quiet doesn’t mean being weak.

Where Were You is executed in acrylic on canvas, is a unique original work, signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Note: the interior photos are atmospheric images and serve solely as impression. Due to its size, the canvas will be carefully rolled and securely packed in a sturdy square shipping tube.
The work is delivered without the pictured frame and without a stretcher frame.

Seller's Story

Hamelink combines contemporary themes with influences from the past and often works in an energetic, expressive style. He draws inspiration from the tradition of artists such as Herman Brood, who was known for his raw, spontaneous approach, as well as Riek van Iersel, who sought a powerful emotional expression in his work. Hamelink is best known for his paintings and drawings, in which he pushes the boundaries of traditional painting and tackles themes such as identity, culture and social issues. His work can be characterised by a direct, unpolished approach to the medium, which exudes a certain spontaneity and energy. Like Brood and Van Iersel, Hamelink plays with the tension between personal experience and the broader social context, often with a focus on contemporary society. His style is often raw, unfiltered and full of expression, using powerful colours and dynamic shapes that enhance the urgency of his themes. Bart Hamelink seems to bridge the gap between traditional expressive movements and contemporary art with his work, while at the same time critically reflecting on modern times.
