Description from the seller
Beautiful antique Chinese openwork woodcarving from the Chaozhou/Teochew tradition, Guangdong, South China.
The deep relief displays a lively underwater world with fish, crabs, prawns, water plants and a braided fishing basket. This famous aquatic motif is closely linked to traditional Chaozhou woodcarving and stands for abundance and prosperity.
Very fine and deeply carved, with many separately raised details and multiple layers. The front is gilded; on the back the old reddish-brown lacquer layer is clearly visible. The main composition is exceptionally well preserved.
Such panels originally formed part of richly decorated interiors, such as altars, screens, furniture or temple architecture.
