Description from the seller

This original work by Bart Hamelink, titled Shadow, is about the dark voice that can keep following a person everywhere. A large black shadow towers over the smaller figure, as if thoughts, insecurity, and fear are growing louder and louder.

The texts “Too loud”, “Make it stop” and “I know it’s not true but I hear it anyway” strengthen the idea of an inner struggle: knowing rationally that something isn’t true, but still hearing and feeling it. The shadow thus almost becomes its own character.

The raw black-and-white execution, rough brushstrokes, and handwritten words give the work a direct, vulnerable, and expressive appearance.

Shadow is executed in acrylic on canvas; it is a unique original, signed by the artist and delivered with a certificate of authenticity.

Please note: the interior photos are mood images and serve solely as an impression. Because of the size, the canvas is carefully rolled and safely packed in a sturdy square shipping tube.

The work is delivered without the pictured frame and without a stretcher frame.

Seller's Story

Hamelink combines contemporary themes with influences from the past and often works in an energetic, expressive style. He draws inspiration from the tradition of artists such as Herman Brood, who was known for his raw, spontaneous approach, as well as Riek van Iersel, who sought a powerful emotional expression in his work. Hamelink is best known for his paintings and drawings, in which he pushes the boundaries of traditional painting and tackles themes such as identity, culture and social issues. His work can be characterised by a direct, unpolished approach to the medium, which exudes a certain spontaneity and energy. Like Brood and Van Iersel, Hamelink plays with the tension between personal experience and the broader social context, often with a focus on contemporary society. His style is often raw, unfiltered and full of expression, using powerful colours and dynamic shapes that enhance the urgency of his themes. Bart Hamelink seems to bridge the gap between traditional expressive movements and contemporary art with his work, while at the same time critically reflecting on modern times.
