Description from the seller
Emmanuelle Pellet - Detox broth
Acrylic painting on cardboard
H: 23.8 cm L: 23.8 cm
Unique piece, hand-painted, signed and numbered
The work was published in the Luxembourg Féminin magazine, for which the artist worked for several years. Two copies of the illustration page and the magazine cover are attached to the shipment.
About the work:
The composition immediately evokes the tradition of winter landscapes from the Dutch Golden Age — snowy scenes populated by busy silhouettes, dear to Avercamp or Bruegel, where village daily life unfolds under a low sky and roofs laden with snow. The log cabin, the crown with the red ribbon, the glittering fir and the hanging icicles recreate with meticulous detail this atmosphere of a winter vigil so characteristic of the genre.
But it is precisely this pictorial heritage that the artist playfully distorts: instead of the skaters and street vendors of the Flemish masters, we discover in the foreground an elegant figure, tasting with the tip of her lips a spoonful of her culinary preparation: suspended above the fire in a pot, a resigned snowman — her detox broth of the day, concocted to stay slim before the holidays.
By grafting a worldly satire onto the visual vocabulary of Dutch genre scenes, the artist makes a savory shift: the snow painting, once a mirror of communal life, becomes here the stage for a very current obsession — the line, the diet, the vanity of holiday seasons — treated with the same care for detail that the old masters lavished on their village scenes.
About the artist:
Historian by training, Emmanuelle Pellet studied at the École du Louvre and then at the Sorbonne, before being admitted to the Agrégation in visual arts (3rd rank). After several years of teaching, she joined the Louvre Museum as head of educational outreach.
Her career now fuels a personal body of work where painting mastery converses with a deep culture of images and art history. Her creations have been exhibited in galleries in Paris, London, Singapore and Mauritius, and have been the subject of numerous publications. They are now included in private collections in Europe, North America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
