A pair of one-light silver candelabras in the Biedermeier style, made of 813 fine silver by Mannheim silversmith Franz Hubert Doreck, Germany, circa 1800–1850, each about 30 cm high with a square base 11.5 cm across, total weight 661 g, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Pair of single-candle candelabra — lightears? made in the Biedermeier style from silver of assay 13 by the Mannheim silversmith Franz Hubert Doreck. He arrived in Mannheim in 1821 from Brünn, ran a goldsmith-jeweler workshop and produced high-quality silver in the Empire and Biedermeier styles.
The candelabra have a twin form and constitute a pair. Both are set on a high, curved bell-shaped foot with a square base described. Each corner of the quadrilateral is marked by a flat, volute foot crowned with a palmette of acanthus leaves. The mantle of the foot is divided by vertical ribs and decorated with repoussé ornament consisting of rocaille motifs and acanthus leaves.
Above, on a square recess, is placed the shaft, sturdy and pear-shaped, slightly widening toward the top. Its surface is also ribbed and decorated at the base with repoussé palmettes of acanthus leaves. At the summit of the candelabra is placed a vase-like tube. It also repeats the divisions of the lower parts of the candelabrum emphasized by the ribs.
In the tubes are placed small saucer-like pieces, the edge of which is decorated with a continuous ornament — Ionic kimation enriched with acanthus leaves.
On the edge of the base of one of the candelabra there is a double signature bearing the numeric silver assay mark 13 (812) and the silversmith’s name written in capitals as Doreck, whereas on the other one only the silver assay mark is applied.
Condition: very good.
The candelabra come from my family’s private collection and have certificates.
