A single sheet from the 1565 edition of Pietro Andrea Mattioli’s herbarium, with woodcuts by Wolfang Meyerpeck and designs by Giorgio Liberale da Udine, depicting on one side a lizard, a highly venomous snake resembling a viper, and a toad-like creature with a pale-scaled back, and on the opposite side two skinks and two geckos, titled Sauri: lucertola, vipera, scinco ecc., in ottime condition and measuring 35 cm by 22.5 cm.
Description from the seller
An woodcut illustration dedicated to the sauri (lizards). On one side of the sheet, at the top there is a lizard, in the middle a very venomous serpent similar to a viper, and at the bottom a stellione—a star lizard—with a well-displayed back of light-colored scales. On the opposite side are depicted two skinks and two geckos. The drawings were all made by Giorgio Liberale of Udine and the woodcuts carved by Wolfang Meyerpeck for the 1565 edition of the famous herbarium by Pietro Andrea Mattioli titled "De i discorsi di m. Pietro Andrea Matthioli sanese, medico cesareo", a work that has trained generations of apothecaries, botanists and physicians, in which part of the second book is devoted to some animals.
The sauri are illustrated and described not with zoological intent, but medical, i.e., highlighting which diseases and ailments they may cure depending on how they are worked and with what elements they are combined.
The sheet has a beautiful, uniform coloration of fairly recent workmanship and shows excellent preservation, with only one black mark in the extreme lower corner of the side with the skinks.
Accurate and prompt shipment.
