Description from the seller
Spanish Expressionist School – 20th Century
Tree Under the Blue Sky
Signed, illegible signature.
Interesting work belonging to the Spanish Expressionist school of the 20th century, characterized by an intensely chromatic and gestural interpretation of the landscape, with evident affinities to Fauvism and the neo-Fauvist currents developed later.
The composition is dominated by a large tree that practically occupies the entire pictorial surface. Its trunk splits into several sinuous branches that structure the scene vertically, turning the plant motif into the true protagonist of the work.
The artist deliberately moves away from naturalistic representation to grant color and brushwork an essentially expressive function. The trunk appears built with intense yellows, oranges, ochres, and whites, which contrast energetically with the deep blue of the sky. The vegetation is resolved with greens of varying intensity applied with broad, spontaneous brushstrokes.
Especially striking is the treatment of the ground, where reds, magentas, oranges, ochres, and greens overlay freely. This autonomous, non-naturalistic use of color constitutes one of the elements that bring the painting closer to the Fauvist tradition, in which chromaticism ceases to be subordinate to the real appearance of the motif and becomes a vehicle of emotion.
The execution is direct, vigorous, and gestural, with plainly visible brushstrokes and material variations that give vitality to the surface. The forms are simplified and, in certain areas, almost approach abstraction, although the landscape’s structure and the monumental presence of the tree remain clearly recognizable.
Thus the work is placed in the realm of expressionist figuration, enriched by a clear Fauvist sensibility and by a modern conception of landscape. Rather than faithfully reproducing a specific place, the artist seems to seek a subjective interpretation of nature through the intensity of color, the deformation of forms, and the energy of the brush.
The painting is signed in the lower right corner, though the signature is illegible, so no concrete attribution is proposed.
