Natura Morta con Fiori e Lumaca, a 19th‑century Italian oil painting of a still life (1870) in a gilded frame.
Description from the seller
Attributed to Casimiro Radice (Milan, 1834 – 1909)
Still Life with Flowers and Snail
Spectacular floral composition of intense decorative force and refined formal elegance. The work presents a rich bouquet arranged in a precious gilded vase, resting on a marble surface, according to a classical construction of great visual balance.
The large red blossoms dominate the scene with vibrant chromatic presence, harmoniously dialoguing with the soft pink tones of the roses and with the bright whites of the central flowers. The dark, deep, theatrical background enhances the plastic rendering of the petals and leaves, highlighting the extraordinary painting quality and the skillful play of chiaroscuro.
In floral still lifes, the snail is often a reference to the Vanitas theme. While the flowers represent beauty at its greatest yet ephemeral, the snail, which feeds on organic matter and crawls slowly, symbolizes the inexorable passage of time and the fragility of beauty itself. It is a silent reminder: just as the petals will fade, everything earthly is destined to be consumed.
The medium is laid with care and luminous sensibility, yielding a nearly tactile perception of the surfaces, while the composition reveals a solid academic approach typical of the Lombard eighteenth–nineteenth century tradition.
A work of great visual impact and notable decorative elegance, ideal both for nineteenth-century painting collections and for representative settings.
Oil on canvas in an important gilded frame.
Good overall condition, with normal signs of wear compatible with the age of the work. Only two spots where the color fades are noted.
Careful shipment with professional packaging.
