Description
Beautiful watercolor by René Mels dated 1974. The sheet opens into a field of blues, watery greens, and violets, interwoven with touches of white and a few rust accents. Darker masses, almost black, structure the composition like branches or shadows.
One can read a undergrowth, a garden, filtered light, without anything freezing. The white of the paper and light highlights give the color room to breathe. Late sheet, still very free: the brushwork remains supple, the chromaticism dense. Typical of Mels in the 1970s, between landscape and lyrical abstraction.
Biography
René Mels (René Meulemans, 1909-1977) trained at the Académies of Leuven and Brussels, then at La Cambre. After an expressionist start influenced by Permeke, he moved in 1947 toward abstraction.
Active member of Jeune Peinture Belge (exhibitions 1947-1948 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels), he joined the group Art abstrait in 1952 and co-founded Cap d’encre in 1963.
His work is characterized by a concern with construction, flexibility of writing, and expressive chromaticism. In 1950, a state grant allowed him to work at Atelier 17 of Stanley William Hayter in Paris.
His watercolors, engravings, pastels, and paintings are held in numerous public Belgian and international collections, notably at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
