Description from the seller
Item Description
This work is a footed tall cup (takasuki) by Kobayashi Masami, a ceramic artist from Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. The slender, flute-shaped form is supported by a pedestal pierced with branch-like openwork, while iron-colored branch motifs extend gracefully across the surface of the vessel. Accents of gilt fruit (or leaf) motifs, placed here and there, stand out against a glaze that shifts from gray to jade green, adding a distinctive warmth to the piece. The rim and pedestal are finished with gilt edging, further enhancing the sculptural silhouette that is emblematic of Kobayashi's original sense of form.
This work is accompanied by a tomobako (artist's original wooden box) bearing the artist's signature, which both authenticates the piece and adds to its value as a collector's item.
The bold, asymmetrical form and refined decoration make this piece equally enjoyable as a functional object or as a striking decorative work.
